Quentin Tarantino (born March 27, 1963 in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States) is an American film director and screenwriter known for his stylish neo-noir violence, razor-sharp dialogue, and interest with film and pop culture.
Tarantino worked in a video store in California before selling two screenplays, True Romance (1993) and Natural Born Killers (1994), to Oliver Stone. Reservoir Dogs, a violent film about a failed jewellery store burglary, was his directorial debut in 1992. With Pulp Fiction, he established himself as a leading director two years later. The provocative film, which included interlocking criminal storylines, won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Tarantino later garnered an Academy Award for best original screenplay (together with Roger Avary). He adapted an Elmore Leonard novel about a flight attendant involved in illegal activity for Jackie Brown (1997).
Quentin Tarantino went on to write and film Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004), both of which revolve around a trained assassin (Uma Thurman) and her quest for vengeance. Grindhouse (2007), a B-movie pastiche, coupled Tarantino’s Death Proof, a thriller about a homicidal stuntman, with Robert Rodriguez’s horror flick Planet Terror. Tarantino’s subsequent three films take an irreverent look at history. Set during WWII, Inglourious Basterds (2009) follows a group of Jewish American troops trained to assassinate Nazis in German-occupied France. Set in the antebellum American South, Django Unchained (2012) portrays the vivid story of a freed slave striving to save his wife from a brutal plantation owner.
Tarantino earned another Academy Award for penning the script for that film. The Hateful Eight (2015) is a post-Civil War western that follows the fisticuffs and verbal barbs exchanged by a group of travellers stranded at an inn during a snowstorm. Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood (2019) is about a washed-up actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stuntman (Brad Pitt), who meet Charles Manson in 1969 Los Angeles. When the picture opened at the Cannes picture Festival, it garnered a standing ovation. Tarantino published a novel based on the dramedy in 2021.
Quentin Tarantino worked as an actor and producer in addition to writing and directing.
