Abdul Karim Career

Abdul Karim Telgi began his counterfeiting career by creating forged passports and visas for visitors to Saudi Arabia. He established Arabian Metro Travels at New Marine Lines in Mumbai and prepared a number of forged passports for migrants seeking to work abroad. In 1993, he was arrested for his role in a visa scheme.

In 1994, he secured a stamp paper licence and began printing counterfeit stamp sheets. He appointed approximately 350 agents to sell the counterfeit stamp papers to bulk purchasers such as banks, insurance companies, stock trading businesses, and so on. He also bribed a number of police officers and government officials in order to keep his business safe. His swindle was estimated to be worth $300 billion (US$3.8 billion).

After a complaint was launched against him in Bengaluru in 1999, he was apprehended in Rajasthan by the Karnataka Special Task Force in 2001. He was also discovered to be engaged in a number of other incidents across the country with the bogus stamp paper scam.

In January 2006, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison by a special court in Pune. In June 2007, another court penalised him 10 billion (US$130 million).
