Abdul Karim Telgi was a well-known forger who orchestrated the phoney stamp paper scandal in India. He was born in Karnataka in 1961 and died in Bengaluru in 2017 from multiple organ failure. He was involved in the printing and sale of counterfeit stamp papers valued at 300 billion (US$3.8 billion) to various companies throughout the country.
He was caught in 2001 and sentenced to 30 years in prison as well as a fine of 10 billion (US$130 million) by various courts. He will be featured in the upcoming online series Scam 2003.

Abdul Karim Career
Abdul Karim Telgi began his counterfeiting career by creating forged passports and visas for visitors to Saudi Arabia. He established Arabian Metro Travels at New Marine Lines in Mumbai and prepared a number of forged passports for migrants seeking to work abroad. In 1993, he was arrested for his role in a visa scheme.
In 1994, he secured a stamp paper licence and began printing counterfeit stamp sheets. He appointed approximately 350 agents to sell the counterfeit stamp papers to bulk purchasers such as banks, insurance companies, stock trading businesses, and so on. He also bribed a number of police officers and government officials in order to keep his business safe. His swindle was estimated to be worth $300 billion (US$3.8 billion).
After a complaint was launched against him in Bengaluru in 1999, he was apprehended in Rajasthan by the Karnataka Special Task Force in 2001. He was also discovered to be engaged in a number of other incidents across the country with the bogus stamp paper scam.
In January 2006, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison by a special court in Pune. In June 2007, another court penalised him 10 billion (US$130 million).
He died of multiple organ failure on October 23, 2017 at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru.
