David Fincher (born August 28, 1962 in Denver, Colorado, USA) is an American music video and film director best known for his dark and atmospheric films.
Alien 3, a sci-fi thriller starring Sigourney Weaver, was Fincher’s feature-film directorial debut in 1992. The film had a difficult production and performed poorly both critically and commercially. The experience turned Fincher off big-budget film franchises, and his next film was the relatively small-scale crime drama Se7en (1995), about two detectives (played by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt) on the hunt for a serial killer (played by Kevin Spacey) who bases his murders on the seven deadly sins. The melancholy Se7en received great reviews and was a box-office success, establishing Fincher as a rising star in Hollywood. He then directed The Game (1997).
His demanding nature resulted in visually stunning films, like as his 1999 effort, Fight Club (stars Pitt and Edward Norton), about a disgruntled white-collar worker who creates a succession of underground combat organisations. This video also functions as a sarcastic examination of self-identity and masculinity. Fight Club was a box office flop in theatres, but it became a cult classic on home video, where it amassed a devoted following. Fincher then directed Panic Room (2002), a story about a mother (Jodie Foster) and her daughter (Kristen Stewart) surviving a terrifying house invasion.
Fincher’s second feature picture, Zodiac (2007), starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr., and Mark Ruffalo and detailed the killings of the Zodiac killer and the ultimately failed quest to arrest him.
Fincher broadened his horizons by directing The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), an adaption of a short tale by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a guy (played by Pitt) who ages backward. Despite not receiving as much critical acclaim as Zodiac, the picture earned Fincher his first Academy Award nomination for best director. The Social Network (2010), a portrayal of Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg’s ascent to power, was his next project.
With The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), a slick adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novel about the investigation of an unsolved murder, Fincher returned to a focus on heinous crime.
